What happens when you stop maintaining your website

Most business owners set up a website and forget about it. Here is what quietly goes wrong — and why it matters more than most people realise.

"My website is fine — I haven't touched it in two years"

It sounds fine — but websites need more attention than most people realise.

A website is not like a sign on your shopfront that you put up once and it stays the same. It is more like a car — even if you are not driving it much, things still need to be checked and maintained.

Here is what actually happens when a website is left without maintenance.

Security vulnerabilities build up

Websites are built on software — and software has security vulnerabilities that get discovered over time. The developers of that software release updates to fix these vulnerabilities.

If you do not apply these updates, your website becomes an easy target for hackers.

This is not a rare event. Thousands of small business websites are hacked every day — not because someone is specifically targeting them, but because automated bots scan the internet for outdated, easy-to-attack sites.

What hackers do with your website:

  • Redirect visitors to spam or harmful websites
  • Use your site to send spam emails (which gets your domain blacklisted)
  • Steal any customer data stored on the site
  • Hold your website hostage and demand payment to restore it

Your site starts showing errors

Websites depend on many connected pieces of software — the core platform, plugins, payment gateways, contact forms, analytics tools. These are all updated independently by their developers.

When versions fall out of sync, things break. A contact form stops sending messages. A gallery stops loading. A payment integration throws an error at checkout.

These things break silently. You only find out when a customer tells you — or when you notice your enquiries have dropped.

Your Google rankings drop

Google regularly updates its ranking algorithm. Websites that are maintained, updated, and fast tend to maintain their rankings. Websites that are left to stagnate tend to slowly slide down.

Page speed is a ranking factor, and websites that are not maintained tend to get slower over time as third-party scripts and plugins become bloated.

Backups disappear

If something goes wrong with your website — a hosting issue, a bad update, a hack — the only way to recover quickly is from a recent backup.

Many small business websites have no backup system at all. If the site goes down, it is gone.

A maintenance plan should include regular automated backups stored somewhere separate from your hosting account.

The fix costs more than the prevention

The most expensive website work is always emergency repair work. A hacked website, a crashed database, or a completely broken site often costs more to fix than a year of maintenance would have cost.

Prevention is almost always cheaper.

What a maintenance plan actually includes

A proper website maintenance service covers:

  • Security updates — keeping all software up to date so vulnerabilities get patched
  • Regular backups — automated backups stored safely so you can always restore
  • Performance checks — making sure the site is still loading quickly
  • Uptime monitoring — getting an alert if the site goes down
  • Content updates — making small changes when you need them
  • Bug fixes — resolving anything that breaks

At AwnOps, maintenance is one of our core services because we believe a website should keep working long after launch — not just for the first few months.

If your website has not been properly maintained, get in touch — we will take a look and tell you what needs attention.
