Local SEO vs global SEO — what is the difference and which do you need?
Should you try to rank globally or focus on your local area first? Here is a clear explanation of the difference — and how to decide what is right for your business.
Two different goals, two different strategies
SEO — Search Engine Optimisation — is about helping your website show up on Google when people search for what you offer.
But "showing up on Google" can mean very different things depending on your business.
A restaurant in Chennai wants to show up when someone nearby searches "best restaurant near me." A software agency that works with clients worldwide wants to show up when someone anywhere searches "website development agency." These are completely different problems with different solutions.
Let's break down both.
What is local SEO?
Local SEO is about showing up in searches that are location-specific.
These include:
- "dentist in Bangalore"
- "web design company near me"
- "best café in Connaught Place"
- Any search where Google shows a map with three business listings (called the "Local Pack")
Local SEO focuses on:
Google Business Profile — your free listing on Google Maps. This is the single most important thing for local businesses. Fill it in completely, add photos, and collect reviews.
Location pages — pages on your website that specifically mention the city or area you serve
Local citations — getting your business name, address, and phone number listed consistently across directories like Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMart, and Yelp
Reviews — Google gives higher local rankings to businesses with more positive reviews
What is global SEO?
Global SEO is about showing up in searches that are not location-specific — searches that anyone, anywhere might do.
These include:
- "how to choose a web development agency"
- "best QA testing tools"
- "website maintenance cost"
- "how long does SEO take"
Global SEO focuses on:
Content — detailed, useful articles and pages that answer the questions your target customers are searching for
Backlinks — links from other websites pointing to yours, which tell Google your site is trustworthy and authoritative
Technical SEO — making sure your site loads fast, works on mobile, has proper structure, and is easy for Google to read
Keyword targeting — writing content specifically around the phrases your ideal customers search for
Which do you need?
The answer depends on your business model.
Focus on local SEO if:
- Your customers need to physically visit you (restaurant, clinic, salon, retail shop)
- You serve a specific city or region
- You are just starting and need to establish a local presence first
Focus on global SEO if:
- You offer services that can be delivered remotely (like web development, design, or consulting)
- Your target customers are not in one specific location
- You want to build long-term organic traffic from anywhere in the world
Do both if:
- You serve local customers but also want to attract clients from further away
- You are an agency or service business based in India but open to working with international clients
The right approach for most small businesses
Start local. It is faster to rank for location-specific searches because there is less competition. Get your Google Business Profile set up, start collecting reviews, and make sure your website clearly mentions where you are based and who you serve.
Once you have a local presence established, start building your global SEO through useful blog content and backlinks.
This is exactly the approach we recommend to our clients — and the one we follow ourselves.
