Why your website is not showing up on Google

You built a website but nobody is finding it on Google. Here are the most common reasons — and what you can actually do about each one.

The most frustrating thing in business

You spent time and money building a website. You search for your business on Google and it is nowhere to be found. Or it appears on page 5, where nobody looks.

You are not alone. This is one of the most common problems small business owners face.

Here are the real reasons this happens — and what you can do about each one.

Reason 1: Your website is brand new

Google needs time to find and index new websites. If your site launched in the last few weeks, it may simply not have been discovered yet.

Google's bots (called crawlers) visit websites regularly, but a brand new site can take 4-12 weeks to start appearing in search results.

What to do: Submit your website to Google Search Console and request indexing. This speeds up the process.

Reason 2: Nobody is linking to your website

Google uses links from other websites as a signal of trust. If no other website links to yours, Google has little reason to trust or rank it.

This is called "backlinks" and it is one of the most important ranking factors.

What to do: Start by getting listed in free business directories (Google Business Profile, Justdial, Sulekha if you are in India). Ask partners or suppliers to link to your site. Write useful blog content that people naturally want to share and link to.

Reason 3: You are targeting the wrong keywords

If you are a dentist in Pune, your website needs to mention "dentist in Pune" — not just "dental services." Google matches search terms to page content.

Many websites use vague language that does not match what real people actually type into Google.

What to do: Think about exactly what your customers search for. Use those specific phrases in your page headings, text, and meta descriptions. Tools like Google Keyword Planner (free) can help you find the right terms.

Reason 4: Your website loads too slowly

Google penalises slow websites in search rankings. A site that takes 8 seconds to load will not rank well, no matter how good the content is.

What to do: Test your site at PageSpeed Insights. Common fixes include compressing images, removing unnecessary plugins, and using a better hosting provider.

Reason 5: Your website is not mobile-friendly

Google now ranks websites based on how they work on mobile devices — this is called mobile-first indexing. If your site is hard to use on a phone, your rankings suffer.

What to do: Test your site on your phone. Can you read it easily? Can you tap buttons without zooming? If not, the site needs to be redesigned responsively.

Reason 6: Your pages have no meta descriptions or titles

The title and description of each page (which appear in Google search results) are important signals. If these are missing, duplicated, or auto-generated, Google has less information to rank you on.

What to do: Every page on your website should have a unique title (under 60 characters) and a description (under 160 characters) that clearly describes what the page is about.

Reason 7: Your content does not answer real questions

Google's job is to match searchers with the most useful answer. If your website just says "We provide quality services," it is not answering anything specific.

What to do: Write content that genuinely helps your target customer. Answer the questions they actually have. A blog is one of the most effective ways to do this over time.

Reason 8: You have not set up Google Business Profile

If you serve customers in a specific location, Google Business Profile is essential. It is what makes you appear in map searches and local results — completely free.

What to do: Go to business.google.com, claim your listing, fill in all the details, add photos, and ask satisfied customers to leave reviews.

How long does SEO take to work?

Honestly — 3 to 6 months to see meaningful results, 6 to 12 months for competitive keywords. SEO is not fast, but it compounds over time. A website that ranks well on Google brings in customers every day without paying for ads.

The best time to start was when you built your website. The second best time is now.
